Four tips for choosing the perfect carpet

You'll even see pet-friendly, hypoallergenic, and eco-friendly versions, but always remember that the perfect carpet is the one that meets your needs and style. There are four things you need to do to choose wisely.

Explore your lifestyle

Consider your family size. If you have kids, pets, or senior residents, your needs will be very different from the two-family home down the street. Even think about the room where it's to be installed because each space has its priorities and challenges. For instance, the low-traffic bedroom would have a different floor covering needs than the stairway where people need to run up and down frequently and safely.

What’s your style?

Are you drawn to bright, bold colors or subtle, cool-toned neutrals? What is your home's overall decor? While nothing needs to match, it should harmonize with the rest of the elements.

Understand quality

Weight alone doesn't tell the whole story. Look at other factors such as density, which refers to how close together the yarns are tufted. The density number on the rug's label should range anywhere between 3,500 and 5,000.

If you're selecting a rug with longer fibers, look at the twist number, also be on the label; that means how many times a yarn is twisted per inch, and the higher the number, the less chance of unraveling. A good twist number is four or above.

Don’t skimp on padding

Padding protects the carpet from the bare floor and also adds to temperature insulation. All cushions are different, however, so don't accept just what's thrown into the bag. Also, some are too thick for carpets! Padding ranges in thickness from ⅜- inch to 7/16 inches and weighs anywhere from five to seven pounds.
